Hello, Reader!

We are very excited to introduce the Rare Earth Photographic Arts Outreach Foundation Blog. The Blog will feature useful resources, inspiring and thought-provoking stories and articles, announcements of competition winners, and the most up-to-date information about upcoming events, activities, and opportunities to stay connected. 

Fear not - you don't have to remember to check back every other day - just subscribe to the Blog here and on or about the first of each month, you will receive a summary of the previous month's content and along with an overview of upcoming events (sort of like this post!) directly in your inbox.

As explained in Rare Earth's 5-Year Plan released in May of 2022, our Year One focus is taking the time needed to explore, research, develop, and refine the programs and initiatives we have planned to deliver in Year Two and beyond. While this meant making the difficult decision to postpone Season Three of The Shooting Range: A Photography, the flagship event that inspired this Foundation, The Board is excited to tackle the following Year One priorities:

  • connecting with community leaders, educators, and school teams to develop and run pilots of our school outreach programs for grades 4 through 12;
  • collecting cameras in support of the school outreach programs being piloted in Spring 2023;
  • recruiting volunteers for the Board, events, and outreach programs;
  • launching the Foundation's first events including the monthly 50/50 cash prize version of The Shooting Range: A Photography Challenge and opening registration for our first annual Summit and Retreat being held from November 11-13, 2022 in Lloydminster, AB;
  • arranging to participate and speak at various conferences around Alberta and across Canada to enrich participant experience, raise awareness of the Foundation, and find like-minded souls who want to get involved.

Lastly, over the next several weeks you will see some changes on Social Media as we merge Rare Earth Outreach's branding with The Shooting Range. You can currently find us on Facebook and Instagram. We will be launching our Twitter and LinkedIn accounts later this year, and look forward to having our TikTok up and running in early 2023 (but don't quote us on that...)

We welcome you to join the first in a series of free Lunch and Learn events at 12pm on October 6th, 2022. This series will run once a month at noon MST on the first Thursday of each month. We'd love to see you - sign up here to get your name on the invite list.

Congratulations to Darlene Hildebrandt, winner of July 2023's 50/50 challenge A Shot in the Dark with guest Judge Monika Deviat. Darlene is an internationally-respected photographer and mentor who has been a supporter from the moment The Shooting Range: A Photography Challenge began, serving as one of our Season One Panel Judges in 2021. Say Hello to Dara Ojo!

Say hello to Dara Ojo, Rare Earth Outreach's Guest Judge for the August 2023 50/50 Challenge! The Match Brief drops August 1st, 2023, so until then we suggest you spend a little time getting to know this month's Guest Judge. This Nigerian-born native has spent many years living abroad, including time in the UK and China, and currently calls Canada home. His early years playing with a busted Nikon didn't translate to a passion for photography until the pandemic hit. With the planet at a dead standstill and left at the mercy of global restrictions on who and how and when we interacted with the world around us, Dara started (quite literally) looking at the world through a different lens: a macro lens!
